Emmanuel Village Katravulapalli

Problem Statement:
Leprosy:
Andhra Pradesh is one of the hyper endemic State for leprosy and East Godavari District has a high incidence of Leprosy. A few voluntary organizations like St. Paul 's Trust, VIMUKTHI and Government Leprosy control units could cure more than 80,000 leprosy patients in East Godavari district alone through Multi drug therapy and now the incidence of Leprosy in East Godavari stands at three cases per 10,000 Population.
Leprosy now has a definite cure available and through multi drug therapy we can cure single patch leprosy with one day treatment and for patches from two to four, can be cured in 6 months and those having patches more than 4 can be cured in one year.

Very soon we will be able to bring down the incidence to one or less than one per 10,000 Population which is called elimination of Leprosy

Patients with Grade I and Grade II deformities:
In East Godavari District, there are 10,000 deformed/Crippled leprosy patients with Grade I and Grade II deformities who needs care after cure. So there is need for taking POD (Prevention of Deformities) for the benefit of these patients which includes, ulcer care, General Medical care, supply of protective foot ware, reconstructive surgery, CBR (Community Based Rehabilitation) and catch them young for the benefit of Leprosy patients children.

Again out of 10,000 Leprosy patients who are crippled and deformed, nearly a 1000 of them are staying in self settled leprosy colonies. So 9000 crippled/deformed leprosy patients are staying in the community.

Again out of 10000 crippled/Deformed leprosy patients, half of them are getting old age pension@Rs.200/- per month. Again another international organization called AMG is giving monthly ration@20Kgs of Rice and 2Kg Dal to each Leprosy patient's (family) for 2000 Leprosy patients. So in short out of these 10000 Leprosy patients, 8000 of these Leprosy patients are living in a miserable condition with out having enough food to eat, not having sufficient clothings and majority of them having no shelter. So in each village, one can find 20 to 100 such crippled/Deformed leprosy patients.

Emmanuel Village : Emmanuel Village is the proposed rehabilitation/care and support center which we are planning to set up in Katravulapalli village in Jaggampeta Mandal in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh for the benefit of 35 crippled and destitute leprosy patients and also for the benefit of another 10 widows, Physically challenged and other weaker sections of the society numbering a total of 45 to 50 families in three 3 acres of land allotted for this purpose by the district administration. In the first phase of the program, we will be taking up the construction of 45 individual houses and each costing Rs.50,000/- out of which 25,000/- per house is a grant given by the district housing board for which the district collector is the chairmen.

Apart from these houses, there will be a community hall (Prayer hall) cum training/production center, a small play ground, Park and Protected water supply, etc. in this Emmanuel village. The housing/community hall construction etc. we are hoping to complete by July 2007. Once we complete the houses and hand it over to the beneficiaries, we will be taking up other developmental activities in Emmanuel village for the benefit of the inmates as well as for the benefit of poor and needy in Katravulapalli village.

Activities at a Glance to be taken up through Emmanuel Village :

  1. Ration supply for the benefit of inmates of Emmanuel Village .
  2. Prevention of deformities (POD) i.e care after cure which includes dressing clinic, supply of MCR chapples (Micro cellular rubber), i.e protective foot ware.
  3. General Clinic for the benefit of inmates of Emmanuel Nagar and other poor and needy in the village.
  4. Bridge school/Tuition center for the benefit of children in Emmanuel village
  5. Training cum production center
  6. CBR (Community Based Rehabilitation)
  7. Home/Community Based Care and Support for the benefit of other Leprosy patients, physically handicapped, HIV/AIDS patients and other weaker sections of the society.
  8. Formation of Self Help Groups.

District Collector has been kind enough to allot nearly 3 acres of land to St. Paul 's Trust for the construction of 45 individual Houses, Community Hall, and Church in Katravulapalli Village in Jaggampeta Mandal, East Godavari District.

Constructed 45 Houses with help of :

  • District Collector through Housing board 25,000/- to each house
  • The Leprosy Mission , UK 25,000/- to each house
  • Joe and Maria bast, Australia 25,000/- to each house
    Total 75,000/-
